Denyse Baboolal's Artist Statement
Over the years I have organized, produced and directed several exciting and thought provoking shows and events in the South Florida and New York area. I had the pleasure of bringing a wide variety of International Artists and performers for these performances and workshops. Usually, my programming attracts audiences from far and wide. These audiences will travel great distances to attend my programs and events simply because it addresses cultural heritages thus giving them exposure to the culture of our ancestors.
I am an instructor and choreographer for Jayadevi Arts Inc for 10 years and facilitated many dance workshops and dance camp for the organization. In 2012 ,I produced, danced, choreographed and taught a 4 week Chutney dance workshop at Rajkumari Cultural Center in New York for the final Kitchrie Festival. Every summer since 2010-present I am hired to facilitate a 4-6 weeks dance workshop in NY. In 2010-2103 I taught summer dance camp at FHO Shiva Mandir in Oakland Park,. On September 2013 I facilitated a workshop to the public called Storytelling in Dance with participants 30-75 years old.
I began dancing at a young age. Dance met important needs for me then, and has continued to do so throughout my life. Yes, dance provided me with an outlet for the expression of joy and other emotions, but never merely that. It's also always been an arena, a place of investigation, experimentation, even struggle—a space for living with the question of the self, for attending to the information living in the body. Dance came naturally to me and as such I have tried to learn every dance style available, including Hip hop, African and as many Indian styles available, Chutney, Kathak, Odissi, Bharatanatyam, folk, and Rajdhar.
My 20 years experience with Rajkumari Cultural Center in New York have prepared me in all aspects of performing arts, lecture demonstrations and workshops.
5 years I have been a host of WAVS 1170 AM and WHSR 980 AM for 1 year. Hosting events for 15 years.
